CAPT (retired) J.Terrell Hoffeld, D.D.S., Ph.D., completed his allotted thirty years of active duty with the Regular Corps of the USPHS in late May 2008. His final assignment was as a Scientific Review Officer with the NIH Center for Scientific Review. In earlier assignments, he had served as Director of the Office of Scientific Review for AHCPR (now AHRQ), Executive Secretary for the NIH Division of Research Grants and Senior Investigator in the Intramural Research Program of the NIDR (now NIDCR).
Within the Commissioned Corps, he served on numerous scientific and professional advisory panels, including two separate terms on the Dental Professional Advisory Committee, and Chair of the DePAC in 2001; he was concurrently Chair of the PAC Chairs PAC. He served on several promotion boards, many appointment boards and a few boards for special personnel actions. He was also a LEGIS Fellow in the office of Senator Max Baucus for a six-month detail
Within the Commissioned Officers Association, he participated in and chaired several DC committees, finally serving as President of the Board of Directors of the DC Metropolitan Area Branch for two successive terms; during the second term, the DC Branch earned the Branch of the Year Award. Currently, he is the Retired Officer Member-at-Large of the Board, serving out the unexpired term of that vacated office.
Within the profession of Dentistry, he has been an active member and served on several committees of the International Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. He has recently been selected to be the Secretary-General of the International College of Dentists, an honorary Dental organization.
In Community Service, he has been at Judge of the Montgomery County Science Fair for twenty-five years and multiple elementary and high school science fairs throughout the greater DC area. He is very active in his church, having taught Sunday school for eleven years, served and chaired multiple committees and is currently completing his second separate term on the Board of Trustees. He is also an Elections Judge for the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
Among awards from the Corps were: Special Assignment Service Award, Outstanding Unit Citation, PHS Citation, Commendation Medal and the Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Medal. In recognition of his professional activities, he is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Washington Academy of Sciences.
He and his wife of 35 years, Edwina, reside in Rockville MD. Their daughter, Erika, is a Veterinarian practicing in Wheaton MD. Their son, Bradley, will complete his M.S. degree in Health Promotion Management at American University this summer.
