(Email SC: Run through 3/21/2023)
The District of Columbia (D.C.) Branch of the Commissioned Officers Association (COA) needs PHS officers from all categories to serve as Science Fair Judges for middle and high schools located in Maryland and Virginia. This activity involves judging science projects in various categories that focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and addressing issues relevant to public health. The science fairs are held from February through March and have mostly returned to in-person participation this year.
We are in need of more officers to volunteer as judges for the following five science fairs that are held in-person:
Fairfax County Regional Science & Engineering Fair, Saturday, March 18, 2023 (7:30 am – 12 pm) *Contact CDR Katherine Won directly if you would like to volunteer
Prince George’s Area Science Fair, Saturday, March 18, 2023 (9 am – 12:30 pm)
Morgan State University (MSU) Science-Mathematics-Engineering Fair, March 18, 2023 (9 am – 12:30 pm)
Loudoun County Regional Science & Engineering Fair, March 22, 2023 (8:15 am – 12:45 pm)
Frederick County Science & Engineering Fair, March 25, 2023 (9 am – 12 pm)
There are a few fairs in the virtual format and judging will be done remotely using the school’s designated online platform. Please refer to the registration form below for further details.
This is a great opportunity to meet some of the brightest students in the D.C. metropolitan area and encourage the scientists, healthcare providers, and engineers of tomorrow. It is amazing and rewarding to see the projects they worked so hard on. Some of the projects truly blow your mind away! Officers will receive instructions from the Lead Judge approximately a week prior to the science fair. Please consider supporting and encouraging our local middle and high school youth by serving as a Science Fair Judge in the DMV area!
Officers are asked to wear their Service Dress Blue uniform when participating in-person as a judge at the science fairs.
Officers interested in serving as a Science Fair Judge should click here to complete the registration form or visit the link below. If you are unable to access the form using your work laptop, consider disconnecting the VPN to access it or use your personal device.

Please note that current DC COA and COA membership (i.e., dues are paid) is required for all DC COA leadership and volunteers IN ORDER TO BE RECOGNIZED (e.g., Certificate of Appreciation) for their participation in a leadership role or as a volunteer for a DC COA-sponsored activity. Officers may choose to participate in a leadership role on a committee or subcommittee, or volunteer for an activity, without being a current member, however, they will not be officially recognized by DC CO/COA for their participation.
